In General
Why 6 a.m.?
Really, why 6 a.m.?
But 6 a.m. is /really/ early...
What's this "season" stuff all about?
We decided way back when to run TechCoffee in cycles, for a bunch of reasons:
It's easier to make a full commitment to something that's timeboxed ("I pledge to be there ten times" is easier than "I pledge to be there forevermore", and more likely to work than "I pledge to be there until I decide otherwise").
It's easier to focus on getting a specific task done with some sort of external deadline. The mindset turns from "I'll work on feature X" to "I'll get feature X done before this season's up".
You may have noticed that Season 1 started at 6AM, while Season 2 started at 7AM. It's much easier to get up early in the spring and summer than in the late fall and winter, so our time chunks let us adapt to seasonal variations.
It's also much, much easier to get someone involved. The first three seasons were run by three different people. If we hadn't been timeboxed, TechCoffee might have had a harder time keeping going after Jason and John's time and interest waned.
What languages are allowed?
Whatever floats your Blub. Season 1 saw Python, Perl, Lisp, Ruby, Javascript, and Java (at least). Oh, and some OCaml. Work on what you're working on. Everyone's welcome.
What projects are allowed?
Any and everything. Ideally, it should be something you don't get a chance to work on while at work. It could be an open source project, a startup idea, or just some personal tinkering. Heck, one participant spent his time editing podcasts.
Or, you could do work.
If you really, really want to.
